Blog Prompt 3
A recurring theme in Shelly’s novel Frankenstein that interested me most was that every ambitious person that has this vision of greatness or major accomplishment ends up either suffering or in route to pain. This is seen most of all in Victor, however others such as Henry Clerval as well as Victor’s Monster. All of these characters have the potential for greatness and strive to achieve it, the monster less so but still he tries to better himself, yet they all end up in a tragic circumstance and eventually death. Both Victor and Clerval remind me of Joseph Conrad’s character Kurtz in his novel Heart of Darkness. The similarities between the two novels interested me a lot as I was reading Frankenstein. I would like to discuss this similarity in my paper. Also a differing theme in Frankenstein that interested me was the idea of with knowledge comes the dangerous ability to use it for evil. This is seen when Victor gives life to the “Monster.” The idea of bringing loved ones back from the grave is a grand idea, however here it creates a killer that in his own self hate takes his vengeance out on others. This is a major theme in the novel seeing as how it is the basis of the plot.
