Blog Prompt 8

The Steam-Gurney.  Although maybe not the most fantastic idea in the novel, in fact perhaps the most likely to and most similar to history as far as technology goes in this novel, plays the most important roll as far as technology we see in the novel goes.  Although during the time period the novel was set in, the technology for a Steam-Gurney was available and easily could have been created, it wasn’t.  The reason it wasn’t was because the thinking of the time had no use for a free moving vehicle, very similar to a train, that could travel where ever it wanted to go.  The Steam-Gurney had no set track that it was destine to fallow, it created its own track, its own path.  This thinking is tied along with the novel and was a far reaching advance from the thinking of the time period.  This thinking of free spirit, that anything could become something great was a spirit of thought not witnessed until the earlier days of the 20th century far ahead of the time period the novel was set.  This advancement of thinking is what made the Steam-Gurney a steampunk idea or piece of technology.  Not the technology itself but the idea behind it, the driving force of why a Steam-Gurney would be made.

The reason why the Steam-Gurney was so important to the novel was because it set up the entire storyline of Sir Edward Mallory.  If not for the Gurney, then the race would never have happened and Sir Edward Mallory would never have become rich and be able to do what he did.  The storyline of Edward Mallory would be a far different story, which in turn would change the outcome of the novel as well as Mallory’s life.
